Northwestern Memorial Foundation is the fundraising arm of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, a premier, integrated academic health system where the patient comes first. Through the Northwestern Medicine brand, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine are committed to transforming the way health care is delivered.
The health system provides quality health care at more than 200 locations across the Chicago metro area with 11 hospitals, two medical groups, more than 5,000 physicians and more than 38,000 employees. Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the system’s tertiary care academic medical center in Chicago, is ranked No. 9 in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report, 2022-2023, and has been the No. 1 hospital in Chicago and Illinois for 11 consecutive years.
Northwestern Medicine was named in 2022 by Forbes as the No. 1 employer in Illinois and as one of America’s best large employers. Five Northwestern Medicine hospitals were rated by the Human Rights Campaign Healthcare Equality Index as LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leaders in recognition of their efforts to adopt LGBTQ-inclusive policies and practices.

Company History
Northwestern Medicine’s history dates back to 1865 when what was then the Deaconess Hospital of Chicago was established by the Rev. William A. Passavant Sr. It was renamed in 1895 in memory of its founder, becoming a general hospital. Wesley Hospital opened in 1888 and, in the mid-1920s, both hospitals signed affiliation agreements with Northwestern University. Years of increased collaboration led to a consolidation of the two hospitals in 1972 as Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Northwestern Memorial Foundation was established in 1981. Northwestern Medicine was effectively formed in 2009 when NMH and Lake Forest Hospital announced an affiliation agreement, with the finalized merger completed in 2010. (Three other health systems and another hospital have affiliated since then.)
